India is bracing for extensive pre-monsoon activity from May 20 to 24, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall across various states.
Karnataka is likely to bear the brunt of a growing cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea. IMD said moderate rainfall is expected in the region. Rainfall has already caused damage and interruptions in some locations, prompting authorities to issue alerts and encourage caution.
While addressing the situation about cyclonic pressure, the IMD issued a statement quoting, “Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea around May 22, and it is likely to move northwards and intensify further.”
According to the IMD weather warning, the cyclonic circulation is expected to continue northwards beginning May 22 and intensifying further, resulting in increased rainfall activity across Maharashtra until May 25. For the past two weeks, the state has experienced moderate pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms, and the IMD has indicated that the monsoon will arrive early as expected.
In the upcoming days, Karnataka could get heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, according to the IMD. A yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for Karnataka until May 22. Furthermore, temperatures are predicted to be between 20 and 33 degrees Celcius. Due to the approaching southwest monsoon, which is predicted to bring with it strong winds, lightning, and a lot of rain, Kerala has been under an orange alert through May 24.
However, at 8.30 am on May 21, Tuesday, the upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to the mid-tropospheric level over the east-central Arabian Sea off the North Karnataka-Goa coast persists over the same region.
Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during the next 12 hours. After that, the low-pressure area is expected to move nearly northwards and further intensify into a depression within the next 36 hours.
