Body of Maharashtra engineer who drowned in Odisha river recovered

Police said the body of a young engineer from Maharashtra, who went missing while bathing in a river in Odisha’s Cuttack, was recovered on Monday morning.

Four engineers working with a private construction company engaged for the renovation of the state-run SCB Medical College and Hospital went to the Kathajodi river bank near Biren Mitra Park around 3 pm on Sunday, an official stated, according to PTI. 

One of them suddenly lost balance and slipped into the deep waters. To rescue him, another member of the group jumped into the river and got swept away by its strong currents, officials informed.

The body of one of the two engineers was found a few hours after the incident, while a search was underway for the other person, the official stated, according to PTI. 

“A team of NDRF personnel fished out the body today morning,” the official said.

The victims were identified as Rutikesh Matal and Rutik Bhonje, both in their mid-20s, and hailing from Maharashtra, the official added.

“The bodies were sent to the SCB Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations, and their families have been informed about the incident,” the official stated. 

Maharashtra: Five killed, two injured after car falls into dry riverbed in Ratnagiri district

Five people were killed and two sustained injuries after their speeding car fell into a dry riverbed in Maharashtra`s Ratnagiri district in the early hours of Monday, reported news agency PTI.

The accident occurred near Khed around 5.45 am, when the vehicle first hit a divider and fell into the dry river bed of the Jagbudi River, an official said. 

The official stated that the car was heading towards Devrukh town from Nallasopara in Palghar district.

Three women and two men were killed, while two people were injured, the official informed. 

The victims were identified as Mitali Vivek More, 43; Megha Paradkar and Saurabh Paradkar (both aged 22), Nihar More, 19, and Shreyas Sawant, 23, reported news agency PTI.

After receiving information about the accident, the Khed Police rushed to the spot and a rescue operation was conducted.

As the river was dry, the vehicle crashed into boulders, killing some of the occupants on the spot, the official said, adding that the injured were undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ratnagiri, reported PTI.

A case is being registered at Khed Police Station, and further probe is underway, the official informed.
