Sinner storms into semis; Gauff to face Paolini in summit clash

Jannik Sinner marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open late on Thursday after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match while in red-hot form on Clay surfaces after winning the Madrid Open earlier this month.

However, the 23-year-old simply brushed aside sixth seed Ruud in just over an hour with an ominous display of tennis.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff downed the 2024 Olympic gold-medallist Zheng Qinwen 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a hard-fought contest that lasted over three-and-a-half hours.

The victorious American will battle Italy’s Jasmine Paolini for the title tonight.

In another game, Carlos Alcaraz dispatched Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), in a battle that lasted less just over two hours, to book his place in the final on Sunday.
